General overview of the post: 

This is a voluntary position for a three year renewable term as trustee of a charitable trust which provides accommodation, care and support for homeless men in Jersey. The trustee will also act as director of the company wholly owned by the trust, namely Sanctuary Trust Limited (the “Company”). The Trust and Company are regulated by the Jersey Care Commission (“JCC”) and the Jersey Charity Commission (the “Charity Commission”).  

The time commitment will be in the region of quarterly board meetings, one strategic away day per year and such other ad hoc board meetings as may be required from time to time. In addition, the trustee will be expected to become a member of a committee, spend time interacting with employees and residents as required and there may be a requirement for particular advice and input from the trustee in the area of their expertise and experience.  

Main responsibilities: 

As the IT/Digital Trustee, you will provide strategic leadership and expertise on all technology and digital matters, ensuring the charity is making the most effective use of technology to enhance its operations, communications, and overall impact. You will offer strategic oversight and advice to support digital transformation, cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, and innovation within the charity. 

Specifically 

  • Development the digital strategy that aligns with the charity’s overall goals and mission. 
  • Identify opportunities for digital transformation across services, fundraising, marketing, and operations. 
  • Advise on digital tools, platforms, and services that can improve the charity’s effectiveness and reach (e.g., CRM systems, social media platforms, cloud computing). 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, Data Protection Act etc). 
  • Ensure robust cybersecurity measures are in place to protect sensitive data and assets. 
  • Advise on digital fundraising strategies, including optimising the charity’s online presence, donation platforms, and use of digital marketing tools. 

Other Trustee Responsibilities: 

Strategic 

  • To ensure that the organisation pursues its stated charitable objects as defined in the Trust instrument and Articles of Association of the Company (the “Articles”), by establishing a clear vision, set of values and strategy, and ensuring that there is a common understanding of these by fellow trustees, residents, employees, donors and associated personnel (the “Stakeholders”).  
  • To ensure that the views of the Stakeholders are regularly sought and considered.  
  • To ensure there is regular review of the external environment for changes that might affect the organisation (political, regulatory, financial, demographic, alliances).  
  • To ensure that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets. 

Risk Management  

  • To ensure that the major risks to the organisation are regularly identified and reviewed and that systems are in place to mitigate or minimise these risks.  
  • To give serious consideration to procuring external professional advice on any matter that presents a material risk to the charity that is beyond the established risk management process, or where the trustees could be perceived to be in breach of their duties. 

Governance 

  • To ensure that the organisation has a governance structure that is appropriate to a charity of its size/complexity, stage of development, and its charitable objects, and reflects the diversity of the Stakeholders.  
  • To ensure that the organisation complies with the Articles, Charity Law, Company Law, Regulation of Care (Jersey) Law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.  
  • To uphold the good name and values of the charity.  
  • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.  
  • To ensure that the board regularly reviews the governance structure and its own performance against an agreed programme.  
  • To ensure that the board regularly reviews its own training needs and creates an expectation of continuous professional development throughout the organisation.  

Financial  

  • Offer advice on technology budgeting, including assessing the value of potential IT investments. 
  • Work with the fundraiser to offset the costs of investments in technology or training where possible. 
  • To ensure that operational plans and budgets support the vision and strategy and to ensure that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable objects. 
  • To ensure the financial stability of the organisation and to maximise opportunities and personal contacts for the purpose of fundraising for the charity.  
  • To protect and manage the property of the charity and ensure the proper investment of its funds.  

Human Resources 

  • To ensure that the organisation acts in accordance with employment law and exercises a duty of care to its employees.  

Personal Specification  

The post holder will: 

  • hold, or have held a senior IT, Digital or Technical role in a medium to large organisation 
  • be a confident communicator, both verbal and written  
  • be well organised and able to work to deadlines 
  • show good, independent judgement 
  • desirably have an understanding of the role of the social care sector and its operations
